12 Timeless Midcentury Modern Kitchens From Designers

small house modern kitchen design

Metallic design accents came to play in a big way with midcentury modern decor, and they're a great way to add the glamour of a bygone era to your kitchen. All-over wood paneling is often one of the first things to indicate a midcentury modern abode—and one of the first things to go when the homeowners inevitably decide to renovate. However, if you're looking to preserve the history of your home, all that natural goodness should absolutely stay.

Take Cabinets to the Ceiling

The stylish wooden island becomes the main element of the kitchen with its beautiful marble countertop. While the dark wood floor brings out the colors, the wooden tables and chairs make up the dining area. A timeless and functional kitchen that is completely comfortable and living in every corner.

Work a dining nook into a small kitchen

In this kitchen designed by Pure Salt Interiors, the curved stools with dark wood bases bring comfort and warmth into the space. As an alternative to a double island, consider filling your kitchen with an extra-long island. There's plenty of room for seating and working in this modern kitchen by Design Alchemy. Note the rounded white pendant lights with a gold interior, tall wooden cabinetry, and gorgeous marble backsplash with beige veining.

Shed natural light into a small kitchen

There's a dose of modern Scandinavian influence in this kitchen design by Sarah Jefferys Architecture. Pale wood tones cover the walls, ceiling, and floor, while natural light floods the space via large windows and sliding glass doors. A luxurious marble island serves as a grounding focal point in the space, while a hint of whimsy is infused via mustard yellow chairs and ketchup-colored pendants. Kitchen island ideas are a dream for many homeowners and it can seem impossible to unite this dream with small kitchen ideas.

It's important that your kitchen feels like a part of your home versus a completely different space. This 1920s farmhouse kitchen, designed by Cory Rodeheaver Spectrum Design Group, embraces the original feel with beautiful arches and cabinetry. If you do like the bright white look, break up the monotony with some carefully placed splashy colors. The aqua backsplace pictured here brings this space to life without feeling kitschy. Unless there's a window above a kitchen sink, this space tends to remain empty. Make the most of it by adding a few rows of open shelving, as seen in this design by Caren Rideau.

Bold Flooring

Decorative accessories will add colorful flourishes and can be easily updated to keep abreast of new kitchen trends. Lamp shades, blinds, curtains, artwork and countertop storage are all good, inexpensive options. For kitchen ceiling ideas for a smaller galley kitchen, if it is possible, install skylights to boost the natural light in the space. If you are lucky enough to have a large cupboard in your kitchen or utility, consider converting it into a small pantry, it will give you that valuable storage space. Plus, there are plenty of different pantry ideas that can suit every shape space. ‘We heated things up with brass sconces, brass cabinet pulls, and warm wood accents through the custom range and accessories,’ continues Shawna.

Open shelves between the white range hood are highly functional and make access to plates and glasses much easier. The gray quartz countertop continues on the white kitchen island and is great for functions such as meal preparation and dining. While the medium-toned wooden cabinets provide enough storage space, the waterfall-edged island made of concrete kitchen countertops creates a striking effect. The dark island provides the functions of preparing, cooking and eating. The blue barstools add a pop of color, while the slim and elegant pendant lamps in black add their modern lines to the kitchen.

“When you lean up against the counter, you don’t want to feel a handle poking into your side. You also want a clean surface where you really see the materiality of [it]. We’ve worked a lot with Dada and have been generally seeing less hardware and more integrated pulls or touch-to-open cabinetry. It makes working much more efficient,” said designer Stephanie Goto. Natural light is the key to making a kitchen feel fresh, open, and clean.

If the idea of an entire wall or room doesn't seem like your style, consider accent touches here and there. Another way to leverage limited countertop space is to designate a cabinet or area in your pantry as an "appliance garage." This is where you can store small appliances that aren't used on a daily basis. If your home's configuration allows, consider re-thinking the existing layout to gain more space. "We redesigned the back entry to be a full walk-in pantry," says Rodeheaver.

The slim ledge is carved out of the same pale quartz worktop as the rest of the kitchen with two stools to perch on and take in the views of the city of Bath, England, outside. Storage is clearly king when it comes to the small kitchen and this is where bespoke, made-to-measure designs as part of the layout really come into their own. The flexibility of having non-standard door sizes, clever corner cabinets and tailor-made carcasses at your fingertips is a huge plus point for small kitchen layouts.

Extend the kitchen counter to include just enough space for two bar stools, which actually face away from the kitchen. To save on counter space, Union of Art Interiors also creates a cubby for the microwave to live. Hanging items from the ceiling of a small kitchen is another way to maximize the space. In this design by interior designer Whitney Leigh Morris, a hanging fruit basket adds rustic charm while serving an important function. If space doesn't allow for a full size kitchen island or bar, that doesn't necessarily mean you must eliminate one from your design plans. This small kitchen by Rumor Designs features a half-sized bar that fits beautifully into the natural footprint of the space.

Storage is a key consideration for any kitchen, however, it is even more important when it comes to small kitchen ideas. ‘Tidiness is really the difference between a small kitchen looking sleek and sophisticated, or cramped,’ says Maryana Grinshpun, principal at Mammoth Projects. She also has a soft spot for feel-good TV, so you can catch her writing about popular shows like Virgin River, Sweet Magnolias, Hallmark Channel’s When Calls the Heart and more. Your kitchen island doesn't have to conform to expectations, especially if there isn't enough space for a standard setup. Here, Philip Consalvo of PJCArchitecture installs a practical island to fit this room's unique footprint and the surrounding space.

With white color scheme, everything is stylish and timeless in this modern small kitchen ideas. The white cabinets take up the top space, creating a frame around the cool look of the white marble backsplash and white quartz kitchen countertop. The white quartz countertop continues as an island and integrates with the wooden floor with wood details. The island provides the perfect space for an extra countertop or dining area with black barstools. This modern kitchenette shows simplicity with its clean lines and light colors.

14 Easy-Care Indoor Plants for Bedrooms to Add Natural Greenery

Prized for its colorful leaves and small stature, these green-purple plants can be grown outdoors or indoors. Oyster plants don't require a lot of maintenance to thrive and can tolerate a forgetful plant parent who lets it run dry. This popular, easy-care plant thrives in just about every light or water situation, and may also serve as a natural air purifier. You can find variations with colorful leaves to help brighten up a dark corner of your house.

Ficus Bonsai Tree

This lets you add a plowing station to your farm and use an oxen to plow and move crops. This increases the area a family can handle by quite a bit — to the point where you can basically double the size of your fields (or just have twice as many fields and crops). Over time, planting the same crop over and over will reduce the fertility (and productivity) of a field.

Parlor Palm (Chamaedorea elegans)

A small plant by the sink or a plant hanging in the window niche of a shower add a touch of greenery and life to a space that can skew stark. With their typically warm temperatures and high humidity levels, bathrooms are the ideal spot for houseplants that appreciate those particular conditions. With dark green leaves and thin stripes that can range from light green to bright pink, the Calathea Pinstripe stands out in any space. The tropical plant is a bit more difficult to care for, so it's best for experienced plant parents.

However, they’ll grow and bloom slower without proper lighting conditions. A warm and very humid environment will bring out the best of an Anthurium as long as they also receive enough water. You should always check the soil at about 1-2 inches deep before watering, as over-watering can result in yellow leaves.

Pricing can fluctuate with seasons and availability, but generally the smaller a plant is, the cheaper it will be. Sunny locations can dry plants out, so check the soil regularly—keep in mind that hanging baskets dry out faster than pots do. Bromeliads are super popular, thanks to their colorful blooms and minimal needs. They're a type of air plant, so they can even grow without soil. This perennial herb can be grown on a sunny windowsill, so you can add a touch of flavor to anything from cocktails to stews.

Their growing environment should consist of a well-draining potting soil that retains water. During the spring and summer, try to maintain the soil constantly damp and reduce watering when the winter settles in. If you want your Calathea plant to be in top shape, it is best to place it in a spot with dappled light or part shade and high humidity. Jade plants prefer bright and indirect light when they are young, but they will thrive in direct sunlight once they reach maturity. Their soil must be well-draining and damp as long as it does not get soggy.

At night, these plants fold up their leaves, leading some people to refer to them (mistakenly) as prayer plants, which are relatives. Calatheas prefer the soil to remain moist but don't tolerate saturated soil. Looking for a low-light indoor plant that tolerates dark corners and neglect? This African native will do fine even if it only gets fluorescent light in an office or shop.

Say goodbye to jam-packed shelves and crowded tabletops by hanging your favorite houseplants from the ceilings, walls, or windowsills instead! Many of the trailing plants on this list hail from warmer climates across the globe, so keep in mind that they'll need a warm, humid atmosphere and bright, indirect light to thrive. Best of all, once you've chosen the perfect plant to hang from your ceiling, you can purchase or DIY a pretty planter for it to further personalize your space.

Ponytail Palm (Beaucarnea Recurvata)

Scientific studies have shown that plants can reduce stress and increase productivity, making your space the perfect environment to unwind after a long day. There's a wide selection of terrific low-maintenance plants for bedrooms—the 14 below are particularly beautiful and easy to care for. Although Gloxinia can't survive in a completely dark room, it will bloom beautifully anywhere it can receive bright, indirect light away from full sun.

With its variegated heart-shaped leaves and spindly, crawling vine, this low-light-tolerant plant needs very little to thrive. While it will do best in bright indirect light, the pothos can handle medium to low light just fine and needs watering every one to two weeks. When you picture a houseplant, the pothos, or Epipremnum pinnatum, is likely what comes to mind. Also known as devil’s ivy or golden pothos, the plants feature vibrant heart-shaped leaves that may be green or marbled green and yellow. They’re easy to grow, needing only indirect sunlight and infrequent watering. Research shows that the plants can lower indoor ozone levels, which can make it easier to breathe and reduce your risk for respiratory ailments, as well as remove VOCs from the air.

An ideal plant for a steamy bathroom, bird's nest ferns like moderate humidity and temperatures around 70 degrees F. A one-time roofer and a serial remodeler, Dan can often be found keeping house at his restored Brooklyn brownstone, where he lives with his wife and kids. This variety is a great choice for smaller yards as it doesn’t overwhelm the landscape with its size.

31 Best Low-Light Indoor Plants to Brighten Up Your Home

Begonia will need to be placed by a window and be watered weekly to stay healthy. Sometimes called the Bamboo Palm because of its bamboo-like stems, this palm tolerates low light quite well and isn't toxic to pets. Just put this South American native in a warmer room with indirect light and let its lush, droopy fronds bring a touch of the tropics to your home.

of the Most Popular Houseplants to Pick Up ASAP

These plants thrive in bright light, so make sure you place them near an east or west-facing window. If you can’t provide them with enough light, they will probably grow slower and produce smaller, less intense-colored foliage. They require watering once every three weeks or when the half-top layer of soil has dried out. With leafless stems that look like literal corkscrews, this unusual houseplant (aka Juncus effusus 'Spiralis') loves moist soil and indirect light.

Philodendron Green

For indoor cultivation, provide bright indirect light and maintain a cool temperature. Occasional misting will also help maintain the humidity that this plant loves. During their growing season, a sunny place will encourage these plants to bloom sporadically. It’s best to water them regularly during the summer, but you should reduce watering in early winter. Keep in mind that the soil must be dry to the touch in-between waterings. For optimal growth, plant your Kalanchoe in ordinary potting soil and feed it with liquid fertilizer twice a week in the summer.

BEST INDOOR PLANTS FOR MEDIUM LIGHT

If you're looking to start a houseplant collection and haven't developed your green thumb yet, some plants are better than others. Houseplants for beginners are easy to grow and can generally withstand erratic watering, uneven or bad light, and fluctuating temperatures. They can thrive in dorm rooms, offices, and sometimes even dismal corners.

Common Houseplants Anyone Can Grow

best plants for a house

Pilea plants are very easy to grow, making them an excellent choice for any type of gardener. They spread all over the world fast because they are very easy to propagate. This means that you can easily grow more of these beauties and share them with friends.

What are the mental health benefits of caring for a houseplant?

The parlor palm is an ideal bedroom companion because it prefers indirect light and can grow with average home humidity (though it grows best with high humidity). When watering, let the soil get barely dry to the touch, then water thoroughly. Popular since the Victorian era, parlor palm (Chamaedorea elegans) is a slow-growing Mexican native and is one of the best low-light indoor houseplants. Parlor palm only needs to be watered when the soil feels dry to the touch, but it does help to mist the plants occasionally during the winter.

How to Shop for a Houseplant

Staghorn fern (Platycerium bifurcatum) gets its name from its antler-like foliage and brings a touch of the tropics to indoor environments. Instead, it is usually mounted on a board and hung on the wall. Treat it like an air plant and mist it daily or soak it in water once a week. Perfect for a hanging basket or urn, the trailing foliage of English ivy (Hedera helix) is an excellent choice to lush up a dull room. English ivy is a low-light indoor plant that comes in a wide variety of leaf colors and shapes.

How to Add an Exotic Palm Tree to Your Yard – And an Expert's Pick of the Best Ones for Small Spaces

Watching them grow can be soothing, promote peaceful feelings, and provide a meditative experience, Rothenberg adds. The beauty of plants and the act of caring for them can be truly healing. “Looking at something aesthetically pleasing can boost neurotransmitters like dopamine and serotonin,” Cates explains.

Marble Queen Pothos

A vining plant that can grow up to 20 feet long indoors, the pothos is also super forgiving and responsive. A 2022 study published in Applied Sciences showed that Boston ferns performed best when it comes to air cleaning by naturally VOCs from the air. The plants grow easily and look the best indoors in hanging baskets or on plant stands, which allow their fronds to drape. They need medium bright light and consistently moist soil, so they might require a bit more of your time. Unlike the other houseplants on this list, air plants are epiphytes, which means they don't need soil to survive! Air plants look great in hanging macrame planters, glass capsules, and terrariums for a modern look.

The freeing (and frustrating) part about owning plants is that you probably should not water them on a specific schedule. Plants are living things that interact with an always-changing environment. Depending on a number of factors like light and season, sometimes they’ll require more water, sometimes less. This basically lets your plant tell you when it’s thirsty year round. When a peace lily is happy, in medium to bright areas of your home, it’ll produce beautiful white flowers.

Hoya comes in flat-leaved or crinkled-leaved forms and occasionally produces highly fragrant white flower clusters. Flat-leaved Hoya also comes in solid green or variegated cream-and-green leaves. You can train a Hoya up a trellis or totem or allow it to trail over the edge of a pot or urn. Although these plants are tolerant of mostly everything, they will thrive in bright, but indirect sunlight. Spider plants need a fast-draining potting soil, regular watering, and occasionally misting to maintain the ideal levels of moisture until winter. During the summer, they will benefit from weekly feeding with liquid fertilizer or pellets.

Here are 28 low-light indoor plants that will do well, even if your windows don't provide bright light. Houseplants instantly add color and texture to any space — whether they’re used to decorate your bedroom, spruce up an office or add some pizzazz to a bookshelf. It’s no secret that being surrounded by greenery does wonders for our physical and mental health. Certain greens have been found to not only purify the air, but provide allergy relief, improve sleep quality and reduce stress levels.

The best environment is in bright, indirect sunlight with a weekly watering. And finally, the Ficus Audrey is a beginner-friendly tree that can grow to make quite a statement. Since its leaves are naturally fuzzy, you'll want to wipe them down with water every few weeks to keep dust from settling and getting in the way of photosynthesis. Besides that, here's what to know about keeping this statement plant happy. Another succulent variety, the versatile aloe vera is easier to keep at home than you might think. Just put it in a spot that gets plenty of sun throughout the day and water it sparingly (like, once a week max—any more and your aloe might develop droopy, mushy-looking leaves).

Forest cacti, on the other hand, will enjoy less sunlight, watering as for a normal houseplant, but not in excess, and warm temperatures during the growing season. But keep in mind that all cacti should be planted in a well-draining cacti soil mix. They are adorable, affordable, and very easy to find on the market.

If you travel a lot, ponytail palm is ideal because the plant stores excess water in its thick base, so it can go for several weeks without being watered. Ponytail palms are sold in various heights, from tabletop to tree-size. Columnea develops tubular yellow or orange blooms that give these jungle natives their common name, goldfish plant.

We do recommend however that if you do get LED strip tape you get a high-quality option. So, if you do end up buying LED lights, be sure to splurge a little for sticky tape and longer-lasting LEDs. I would mostly recommend using an area rug on the ground as opposed to hanging it on the wall. It will look best on the ground and if you get a big enough one it can make the stage look full but not crammed. We'll show you how to achieve your church's growth goals and stand out in your community with results-driven digital marketing.

Moreover, considering the placement and type of microphones and speakers is key. Opt for high-quality microphones that can capture clear and crisp audio, and strategically position speakers to evenly distribute sound throughout the space.

Set pieces and props are physical elements that contribute to the overall visual impact of the church stage design. These can include items such as furniture, plants, artwork, or symbolic objects that align with the theme or message of the service. Set pieces can be used to create different levels and dimensions on the stage, adding depth and visual interest.

One must not overlook the importance of community involvement and feedback. If you love the charm of Craftsman house plans and are working with a small lot, a bungalow house plan might be your best bet. Bungalow floor plan designs are typically simple, compact and longer than they are wide. Also, like their Craftsman cousin, bungalow house designs tend to sport cute curb appeal by way of a wide front porch (or stoop) supported by tapered or paired columns and low-slung rooflines. Ideal for small urban or narrow lots, these small home plan designs (or "small-ish") are usually one or one-and-a-half stories, and (generally) budget-friendly. Making the most of their square footage, bungalow house plans typically feature open floor plans with few hallways and rooms arranged for easy accessibility.

We’ve already experienced major events like the back-to-back weekends of the Coachella Valley Music & Arts Festival and its sister country music festival, Stagecoach, out at the Empire Polo Club in Indio in April. Enthusiastic fans quickly sold out the ’80s-infused Cruel World Festival and partied it up at the ode to the early ’00s, Just Like Heaven Festival, both of which both took over Brookside at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena in May. GA pool passes include access to all three host resorts, with programming Saturday & Sunday from noon to sundown. If you’re feeling like making some friends, book a hotel package to call Splash House home. Hotel packages include weekend passes and a 3-night stay at one of our host resorts. By night, attendees can enjoy After Hours programming at the Palm Springs Air Museum.

You’ve felt it before – the music is just right, your friends are close, and all your cares fade away to the beat. However dynamite the performances and technical components, the script, while chock-full of funny moments, ultimately lacks real substance. While I greatly enjoyed O’Neill’s performance, The Nina’s writing was confusing at several points in the story. Her motivations for why she wants to compete in air guitar competitions are a complete mystery for the first 45 minutes of the show, clarified for a moment and then muddied again in the second half. That being said, her character also benefits from some of the best writing in the script, namely the intense scenes between The Nina and D Vicious which are again elevated by equally raw performances.

Tyler, The Creator’s Camp Flog Gnaw Festival will return to Dodger Stadium for the first time since 2019. The lineup has yet to be announced but in the past has included artists like Drake, Solange, YG, Omar Apollo, Dominic Fike, Summer Walker and more. Fans are promised plenty of carnival games and rides, including a pop-up shop for fans to find merch and footwear from Tyler’s Golf Wang collection. Goldenvoice is bringing metal music back to the Empire Polo Club in Indio with the three-day Power Trip music festival featuring performances by Metallica and Guns N’ Roses on Oct. 6; AC/DC and Ozzy Osbourne on Oct. 7; and Iron Maiden and Tool on Oct. 8.

The Bachelor and BOP receive funding from the Wabash College Student Senate, which derives its funds from the Wabash College student body. Josh Campbell ’25 plays Shreddy Eddy, the air guitar purist and true believer in the art form. Campbell’s total sincerity is irreplaceable in a show with such a ridiculous premise, making the implausible plausible.

The lineup for the festival’s June edition was released in May, but the August lineup has yet to be released. After working at The Desert Sun for 15 years as a city government reporter and most recently an entertainment columnist, she began a new job at Desert Water Agency. But, she never lost her passion for writing about what’s happening in this SoCal oasis. She loves attending and writing about all the major desert events - from Modernism Week and the Palm Springs International Film Festival to the BNP Paribas Open and Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival.

While utterly confident and commanding with his line delivery, he shines with physical comedy. There’s no doubt he relishes every note of air guitar, including the most out-of-left-field and outrageously funny solo of the show that must be seen to be believed. The all-ages, two-day punk rock show has expanded to include three stages and a Vans skate ramp this year. There will also be craft beer tastings for those 21-and-older and performances by Pennywise, Descendents, Circle Jerks, Goldfinger, The Suicide Machines and more. Head in the Clouds Festival will celebrate Asian artists, music and food with performances by PR Live, DPR Ian, Jackson Wang, NIKI, Rich Brian, Rina Sawayama, XG, YOASOBI, Zedd, TOKiMONSTA, Keith Ape and more. 88 rising is also welcoming back 626 Night Market as the official food curator for the event.

However, if you’re thinking this hard about “Airness,” you may have missed the point. The whole experience is unrepentant, weaponized cheesiness, and that’s to its credit. “Airness” is a gleeful celebration of the dorky wannabe rockstar in all of us.

The June lineup includes performances from Armand Van Helden, Ash Lauryn, Azzecca, Black Loops, BONES, Bontan, Chelina Manuhutu, Chromeo (DJ set), Cloonee, Dennis Ferrer, DJ Susan and more. Greater Palm Springs is known for its plethora of pools and iconic music festivals. Splash House, which is celebrating its 10th anniversary, melds the best parts of music and pools.

Three after-hour sets will then be held at the Palm Springs Air Museum starting at 9 p.m. Saturday night with DJs On—1 back to back with Oren followed by Jean Pierre, and Gordo closing out at midnight. When the sun goes down, the party shifts from poolside to plane-side with a unique after-hours show at the Palm Springs Air Museum, which has a variety of vintage war aircrafts on display.

The Eddie Vedder-curated Ohana Festival will once again take over Doheny State Beach in Dana Point with The Killers headlining on Friday, Vedder on Saturday and Foo Fighters will close out the event on Sunday. Other performers include Haim, Father John Misty, Japanese Breakfast, The War On Drugs, Pretenders, The Backseat Lovers, Dehd, Lido Pimenta and more. The music festival scene in Southern California is alive and thriving in 2023. Palm Springs - this is our home and the unparalleled backdrop to our party for 10 years.

Renaissance Palm Springs has panoramic views of the San Jacinto mountains, fire pits, and a huge pool and pool deck with lots of room to roam and dance. Margaritaville Resort is an island-inspired resort named after Jimmy Buffet’s iconic song and has a huge pool area and deck with a tropical paradise feel. The Saguaro is known for its signature multicolored decor and spectacular view of the San Jacinto Mountains — a great place for that dreamy Instagram photo. As the abrasive Cannibal Queen, Elizabeth Hutson eventually lowers her guard and brings a thoughtfulness to her shock-rocker character in a twist I was pleasantly surprised by.

Over the last decade, Splash House has continually redefined the summer festival, fostering a boutique experience in the heart of Palm Springs with ahead of its time music curation and a devout fan community. Taking place August & August 18-20, Splash House will celebrate its second consecutive triple weekender season and complete a monumental year for the brand. The event, which takes place across three Palm Springs hotels, is the city’s largest summer concert, continually drawing thousands despite its occurrence during the area’s slowest (and hottest season). All artists perform poolside, so festivalgoers can kick back, cool off and enjoy an array of EDM acts while taking a dip.

The old-school soul and R&B festival is returning to Los Angeles for a one-night-only event with performances by Lisa Lisa, Taylor Dayne, Stevie B, Cover Girls, Expose, Trinere, Sweet Sensation, Nocera and more. Most 10-year-olds don’t get poolside bacchanals for their birthday, but Splash House celebrated a decade of music, revelry and pool floaties with a pair of back-to-back bashes last month in Palm Springs, California, for their decade celebration. New for this year, Splash House attendees will have the option to stay at offsite hotel options Palm Mountain Resort & Spa or L3 Oasis Hotel. Located right across the street from Margaritaville, L3 Oasis is just steps from the action and festival shuttles to take you between all host locations. There will be hourly shuttle service between Palm Mountain Resort & Spa and Renaissance Palm Springs only from 12-7PM (once per hour). Splash House is a co-production of Goldenvoice, the promoters behind the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival and Stagecoach country music festival, that was founded in 2013 by desert locals (and siblings) Tyler and Kelly McLean.

Netflix's The House Release Date, Cast, And Plot What We Know So Far

Immigration gives them one more chance, but it means they have to live together for real. To House's surprise, he enjoys spending time with Dominika and when her citizenship is granted, he keeps this knowledge from her so she will stay. House starts the year in prison, serving out a long term for his various misdeeds in Moving On.

Danielle pushes Gabby too far

Eleven months after driving his car into Cuddy's house, three of which were spent on the run and the other eight in prison, House goes before the parole board and learns he has only five days left before he is released. This perfectly illustrates the different ways Danielle and Gabby roll. Danielle is just herself; she shows that she can hang out and likes a good time. As soon as Joe shows up at the party, she is on him like mayo on a lobster roll. Gabby is the kind of girl who would have watched Sex and the City and ordered that book The Rules. She needs to see their credit score before she goes out on a third date.

Ciara tells the girls that she needs to know how West feels about her before she has sex with him. I mean, I don’t really need to know that, but I am nosy, and I want to hear about West’s sex life. With the three-episode structure for the series, there are many roles voiced by notable actors.

The first episode is directed by Emma de Swaef and Marc James Roels. This story revolves around a family that moves into the house in the 19th century. However, when treating a chemistry teacher, Chase and Adams are in the room when the patient suffers a psychotic break. In the melee, Chase is badly stabbed and the life-saving surgery nearly costs him the use of his legs as well. He takes a lengthy leave of absence and, when he returns, has an inappropriate relationship with a patient.

Not only that, the mothers choose the names Sophie and Sophia. In addition, Rachel announces that she wants to move to Seattle with her new boyfriend Phil and take Sophia with them. Returning characters for this season include House's wife, Dominika Petrova, his favourite prostitute, Emily, and almost all the main/guest characters that left the show. When the hospital's coroner (Jamie Elman) begins slicing his own scalp open, he is admitted but will only accept medical care personally decided on by House.

In early 2012, it was confirmed that this season was House's last, and it would have a "swan song" episode (a two hour finale consisting of a retrospective and the series finale). The finale was co-written and directed by series creator David Shore. The last few episodes focused heavily on a Hilson story line. Olivia Wilde, Kal Penn, Anne Dudek, Sela Ward, Amber Tamblyn, and Jennifer Morrison also returned for the finale. Production of Season 8 was somewhat delayed and the season did not begin airing until October 3, 2011. Part of the issue was that without a firm deal to continue the series, NBCUniversal only had Hugh Laurie and Olivia Wilde under contract to appear in any following season.

In the new season, “Summer should be fun, and our favorite housemates seem poised to indulge in the most carefree summer yet. But while some relationships start to take off, others are revealed to be more fractured than anyone could have imagined, according to a description from Bravo. With prison looming, House hatches a number of crazy schemes in an attempt to stay out of jail long enough to be with Wilson during the last months of his life.

However, shortly after Fox's announcement, Robert Sean Leonard, Peter Jacobson, and Omar Epps agreed to new contracts. Jesse Spencer was in negotiations longer, but finally agreed to a new contract. However, Lisa Edelstein announced she would not be returning and instead joined the cast of The Good Wife. Meanwhile, House confronts his insecurities when his hooker/companion decides to leave him. An independent blind man (Michael B. Jordan) is admitted to the hospital after suffering auditory hallucinations, and soon begins coughing up blood. However, his treatment could leave him more disabled than before.

How can I watch “Summer House” if I don’t have cable?

Foreman offers him a promotion to stay, but Chase feels that he has to get out of House's shadow once and for all and leaves the hospital. A six-year-old girl (Rachel Eggleston) with a rare genetic disorder (Ataxia Telangiectasia) is admitted to the hospital after suffering a nosebleed and losing consciousness. Foreman has the team consult with her mother (Jessica Collins) who is also an expert in her daughter's condition. Meanwhile, Wilson decides on a radical and potentially fatal course of treatment for his cancer, which House agrees to administer himself.

I mean, I would even do that, and I’m gayer than Liza Minnelli’s makeup drawer. When Carl walks in, Sharon gives him a big hug and says, “Do I have to let go? The three episodes of "The House" are in the style of an anthology. Each episode is directed by a different director and a different host of characters. While the characters change, each story revolves around the titular house at different times in chronological order.

Eventually, House comes to terms with Wilson's choice and the two start to plan for their last few months together. At that point, Foreman drops a bombshell - because of a disastrous prank, House has to go back to jail for the next six months. Both his ex-wife and ex-girlfriend are furious with him, and he's on the hook for two child support payments and one alimony payment.

But things turn bad when in a fit of psychosis and violence, the patient stabs Chase, ultimately forcing the team into a race against time as they battle to keep Chase alive in the ER. As the patient is going to be transferred, House realizes his syndrome and informs his wife. As he is on the hearing with Dr. Cofield, he is prepared to send House to prison again, but the wife of the patient arrives and thanks him for his correct treatment. Dr. Cofield sets him free, but House berates him for his cowardice as it was obvious that he would have been arrested, so he let him loose to avoid media attention.

However, House initially tries to reconnect with Thirteen, he finally sends her off with her girlfriend to live in Greece. House accepts the offer and gets out of prison, eventually reconnecting with a doctor who worked in the infirmary who he's made unemployable, Jessica Adams. With one new team member established, he soon meets a bright but timid resident, Chi Park, and adds her to his growing entourage of no-cost doctors as well. He receives a cold welcome from James Wilson, but after a cathartic punch to the nose, the two men reconnect.

90s Graphic Design Trends Making a Comeback Design

1990s graphic design

In 1997, the world looked on as Geri Halliwell wore her infamous union jack dress at the Brit awards, a timely pastiche of the Brit Pop trend of that moment, which was informed by the 1960s mod aesthetic. Speaking of poster design, the 90’s rave posters were truly something. The iconic movement was represented visually by psychedelic motifs, bright, even neon colors, and really, chaos and non-logical elements like floating body parts, all referring to fantasy and futurism. Looking at the 90’s poster design, we can really say it’s a wild experiment with colors, shapes, dimensions, and typography. One reason is that graphic design editing software like Photoshop first emerged exactly in this decade. This allowed designers to experiment with computer modeling combined with traditional graphic design techniques to create absolutely revolutionary looks at the time.

Hip hop and the skateboarding culture launched graffiti-style 90s logos, while others opted for the grunge style. Another significant movement that worked to influence the 90s graphic design trend was 90s rave culture. This movement was born out of the previous era’s acid house scene within the music industry.

For a small monthly fee, you can have access to thousands of assets like 1990s print templates and 1990s Instagram graphics to elevate your projects. Austrian-born Stefan Sagmeister rose to prominence in the early 90s and is well-known in the field of graphic design due to his work in the music industry. He has created conceptual artwork for the likes of Lou Reed and The Rolling Stones. The magazine’s dismissal of grid-based layouts and anarchic embrace of broken type and collage graphics made the perfect match for the alt-music content.

Musical Influence

Sister Karen Boccalero (herself mentored by Sister Corita), Carlos Bueno, Antonio Ibáñez, and Frank Hernández were motivated to form the group by the lack of opportunities and facilities for young Latinx artists looking to develop their creative skills. Several influential Chicanx artists produced early prints at Self Help Graphics, including Carlos Almaraz, Barbara Carrasco, Yreina Cervantez, and Diane Gamboa. What began primarily as a printmaking workshop expanded to include other art forms, like performance art and music. From 1975 to 1985, a customized van dubbed the Barrio Mobile Art Studio would drive to elementary schools in East Los Angeles, teaching kids filmmaking, photography, sculpture, painting, and puppetry. The bright colours, abstract textures and attention grabbing typography can be seen in a variety of interfaces today, including websites, posters, advertisements, social media posts and branding to name a few. One of the most poignant artists of the 90s who really worked to shape the trend into what it is today is pop icon Britney Spears.

Movie posters

From either perspective, it was evident that the old certainties were disintegrating. The 1990s logo designs were influenced by pop culture and underground music. Organic and handwritten fonts boomed, bright colors reigned, and patterns were everywhere you looked.

He teaches art and design history at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. In Catfish, even the quiet labor of studying one's precedents is staged as a precarious struggle. Earls meets the art historian Ernst Gömbrich, who berates him for not "risking enough" while forcing him to contemplate the antifascist photomontages of John Heartfield. Gömbrich later helps Earls self-administer a genetic experiment that will either help him grow as an artist or kill him (see figs. 23 and 24). The possibility of change thus seems to lie not in expired visions of social transformation, but in mining the self for something unique.

This is yet another example in recent years of music culture having a significant impact on the graphic design world. This underground subculture of music was characterised by house music, surrealism, psychedelics and cyberpunk themes. As we mentioned earlier, the early 90s graphic design trends were based in grunge themes of chaos and radicality. Countering the rigid beauty standards that had been created in society, anti-design embraced the ‘ugly’ side of art, and ushered in a surge of experimental design, layouts, elements that screamed “I’m unapologetic!

1990s graphic design

It also saw the incorporation of geometric shapes into common objects such as carpets and wallpapers. This trend is still common today as most designs still use bright colors to attract attention. Billboards and TV commercials go for these vibrant colors to stand out from the crowded competition. The 90s graphic design style was marked by bright and bold colors, such as yellow, purple, pink, cerulean blue, and fluorescent green, among others. Designers also experimented with neon lasers, and used them to great effect.

In the spirit of standing on the shoulders of giants, here are influential artists of the 1990s who changed the game with their iconic works and significant contribution to graphic design. If one design term comes to mind when thinking about the late 90s, it has to be minimalism. An extreme break with the brash excess of styles earlier in the decade, the trend for stripped-back, clean design developed in postmodern architecture, but was catapulted into commercial design by the fashion industry. Fashion designers are revisiting 90s cartoon characters in their designs, and beauty brands are bringing back the classic 90s aesthetic to market their products. The bright and garish contrasting color palettes and fun squiggly graphic shapes of the Memphis design trend carried on through the early ’90s, infamously used in the various iterations of the Seinfeld logo, as well as Saved by the Bell.

“I put aside the 12th century and jumped into the 20th,” she told Hyperallergic last year. Wells founded the center in 1988 and has spent the past 30 years collecting and exhibiting posters and graphics related to protest, activism, resistance, and struggles for equality. On June 30, they’ll open an online exhibition of posters chronicling LGBTQ struggles and celebrations, drawing on other collections, including the ONE Archives. While in-person exhibitions won’t resume until next year, the center will reopen on June 15 for those interested in making research appointments to peruse their extensive archive. Fifty years ago, a Franciscan nun and printmaker and a group of Latinx artists founded Self Help Graphics & Art in an East LA garage.

Influenced by fashion, music, videos, and magazines of this decade, along with the globalization of the internet, it’s no wonder there was such a wide range of design styles prevalent during this time. The bottom line was throwing out the classic rules, and welcoming new styles and influences, ranging from graffiti to punk cultures. The 90s graphic design style marked the age of experimentation with new features, styles and views. As works like Catfish illustrate, Earls has made the leap into that longed-for utopia in which the tools of graphic design are redirected toward ends of the designer's own choosing. There is no client or boss in the wings asking him to make the type bigger—which leaves him an open space to explore personal obsessions and myths. Yet even in this highly idiosyncratic material, Earls seems to drag along the anxious boredom of the professional, bound by an opaque social command to innovate.

With vector software readily available to designers of all levels, and most designs from this decade immortalized on the internet, there are plenty of examples to draw inspiration from. Rock, indie, British pop, grunge, and electronic rave music ruled the decade, influencing a “carefree” design style throughout. This decade also faced some polarization in the design styles influenced by music. Neon and psychedelic smileys lived on the club culture side of things. These were opposed by the carefree grunge mood and fun-loving style of Britpop. Back in the 90s, many contrasting movements got famous at the same time.

It is no surprise that sewing and scrapbooking emerged as popular hobbies, but it was somewhat novel that they were integrated into the graphic design practice. Luser is another graffiti style font that became popular with the popularization of hip hop. The 90s were full of subcultures that influenced how everything looked and shaped many graphic styles from this decade. This graffiti font is very similar to the Fresh Prince of Bel-Air's logo.

The themes of fantasy, planets, and the galaxy were very much on the rise and could be seen in poster design, flyer design, album covers, and more. If you're looking to add some grunge aesthetic to your 90s logo design, this font is legible and clean. Aside from the regular font files, the pack comes with SVG, vector, and PSD versions.

Grunge design is dismissive of grid-based layouts and often includes collage graphics, broken types, and grime textures. It is a trend that goes against all design rules and aesthetically pleasing content. It is a medium used to express the chaos of the world and to protest and deny its beauty and grace. They make IRIX, which is their version of Unix (which today we pretty much just have Linux).

TV shows like Rugrats, Saved by the Bell, and Full House influenced the use of sans serif and casual handwritten style fonts. Comic Sans was released in 1995, and it was used anywhere from children's invitations to newsletters. The underground music scene and pop culture were big influences for 1990s logo design. The New Wave music from the seventies and eighties led to rave culture, and hip hop led to graffiti. Popular TV shows like Friends and the Rugrats influenced the use of handwriting anywhere from professional newsletters to logos.

I’m not saying one of these is right, or one of these is wrong, but if someone lands a hot tradesman at a party for a one-night stand, it will be Danielle. Gabby says, “What’s not going to happen is me versus Danielle for a dude who blows up balloons as a hobby.” Well, he does it for a living, but still. This is not a guy that Gabby would ever take seriously for marriage, and it seems like that is what she is out for. She does not want a bit of rough in an inflatable UFO in the backyard. What is the plot of The House?

When she leaves him to return to be a nun, Chase decides to return to the team. House is put on a short leash, and the hospital lacks the funding to provide him with a proper team. Park is his only employee, and House must convince Adams and other doctors to donate their services to help him.

Mid-Season Finale Part 1

Gabby is gorgeous, funny, and can’t flip over a couch without crashing to the floor. Some guy is going to pursue her just the way she wants, but it’s going to take more time. Yes, I love sluts, and if I were born a straight woman, I would be giving it away to every man who asks. Danielle isn’t that slutty, but I love that she is in a promiscuous phase, not taking any flack from anyone about it and doing herself (and others!) loud and proud. Not only did she hook up the night before going to the Hamptons, she met some hot-ass dudes at the club and invited them to the party the next day.

house season 8

Meanwhile, House searches for a valid reason to attend a boxing match in Atlantic City, and Taub must decide whether to allow his ex-wife to move away, taking his daughter with her. The series finale aired on May 21, following a retrospective episode titled "Swan Song". There wasn’t much Kyle and Amanda drama this week, for a change, but I loved seeing Amanda let out her fun side and stay out with Kyle until 3 a.m. He says that she did it for him, and this is the kind of compromise I want from these two. Amanda did it for Kyle, she didn’t complain about it, Kyle was grateful, and now she can check off going out from her list of summer duties. Now, can we get Kyle to stay in and binge Married at First Sight Australia next weekend with Amanda?

house season 8

With his life crumbling around him, House hallucinates people from his past (Braugher, Dudek, Morrison, Penn, Tamblyn, Ward) as he decides whether his life is worth living anymore. Back at PPTH, Foreman settles into Cuddy's old job, and Chase succeeds House as director of diagnostic medicine, with Adams and Park as his new team. Meanwhile, Taub dines with Rachel, Ruby, and his daughters, and a re-married Cameron has become a mother and chief of a Chicago emergency room. Mounting motorcycles together, House offers to help make Wilson's last months of life liveable. The pattern I didn’t recognize until Paige pointed it out is that Danielle always has opinions on how everyone else is living but doesn’t want people to comment on her life.

When Kyle asks about the status of their relationship, Paige says she knows she’s going to marry the guy, but she’s going to do it on her own timeline. I respect that, but I also agree with Danielle; she’s not giving Craig anything. Based on what we see on the shows, it seems like she’s not really willing to compromise to make their relationship work. But, like Ciara, Paige is the kind of girl that you work for and you wait for and Craig seems to be totally into that. That is exactly how I feel watching West and Ciara, a.k.a. Wiara.

Carl admits he’s afraid of Lindsay’s temper

The alien party continues, and when it moves into the house, Danielle and Gabby sit on a couch together. Danielle immediately starts grilling her about her love life (or lack of it). The second episode takes place during the present day and is directed by Niki Lindroth von Bahr. This houseguest is a property developer and finds that the house has been infested. The last episode is directed by Paloma Baeza, and it looks to take place during an end-times scenario. Jen (Helena Bonham-Carter) is attempting to fix up the house in a desolate landscape.

A college student (Skylar Astin) is admitted with dizziness and nosebleeds but the team soon discovers that he hears his dead brother's voice, and they must try to decide which of his symptoms are psychological in nature. A man suffering from early-onset familial Alzheimer's disease (Ivo Nandi) begins vomiting, and is admitted to the hospital, with his wife (Melanie Lynskey) taking care of him. He soon develops aggression and language loss, but the team find it difficult to distinguish his new symptoms from his Alzheimer's. Meanwhile, House and Wilson keep betting on what is causing a woman's apparent asexuality and Foreman debates whether or not he should petition House's parole officer to remove his ankle monitor early. The next morning after sending Ballon Guy on his way, Danielle comes to Gabby’s room to talk.

He comes over to set up the party and Lindsay introduces him to Danielle, who says “Hi” in her scroungy outfit wearing a tin-foil hat looking like a fool who just work up in someone else’s tent at a music festival. Lindsay calls over Gabby, but she doesn’t come because she’s not looking hot enough. “If we’re going to tell people years from now our first meeting, it’s not going to be that I met him sweaty, exhausted, and setting up for a party,” she says in confessional. One is that, because of this set up, everyone is all up in their business.

Meanwhile, he takes the case of a clinic patient (Julie Mond), a nun on the verge of making her vows, when she begins vomiting and exhibiting neurological symptoms. During the course of her treatment, he develops feelings for her which compromise his objectivity. In a subplot, House subjects Taub to a series of prankish 'ambushes' in order to prove to him, in light of Chase's stabbing, that nobody can fully prepare for the unexpected.

However, it turns out that he didn't even try to get a lesser sentence and took a one-year term without complaint. He blows a chance for early parole in order to prove a fellow patient's diagnosis. Although he plans to withdraw from the practice of medicine, it appears the real co-dependent relationship is between House and the hospital. With House looking at serving at least another six months, the new Dean of Medicine, Eric Foreman approaches House with an offer to return to work. I actually peeped him at the last party when he was setting up balloons. Lindsay did, too, and befriended him enough that they invited him to do more balloons for the alien party and wanted to introduce him to Danielle and Gabby.

She shows up in Princeton with her new fiance, Thomas Bell, a man who House has believed for forty years was his biological father. At a cathartic dinner, House reveals his immigration wife (which Bell supports given the U.S. immigration system) and his stint in prison (which his mother knew about from reading the Princeton newspapers). She also admits she and Bell got married shortly after John House died. House finally confronts her about Bell, and she admits she deceived both of them. However, Wilson is too tempted and tests Bell's DNA - he's not House's biological father either.
